Summary: This peak is the highest (6,317ft) in karnataka and the highest between Nilgiris and the Himalayas. This peak can be reached from Chikamagalur and is around 15+kms distance from the town. A few buses going towards the Baba Budanagiri (starting at 7 AM, with 1-hour interval) will take you to the foothill of the peak where an arch (Sarpadaari) is built saying about the peak Mullayanagiri.Try to make the best use of the rare occasion to travel atop a crowded bus, and enjoy the thrill of seeing steep hills and gorges staring right on your face as the bus takes one treacherous turn after the other. This could be the starting point or a little before this spot another track (jeep track) takes you to the peak. From here it is nice trek to Kemmangundi via Bababudangiri and GaLi kere..
Once you reach Mullayanagiri, you can stay at the Shiva temple at the top. You can get lunch/dinner from the temple pujari. Next day you can start for budangiri which may take 5-8 hrs depending on your group speed. Once at Bababudangiri you have various stalls serving awfully bad food.
The trek from Mullayanagiri temple to Bababudanagiri shrine can be pretty exhausting-- it is around 16 km, and passes through no defined trail. You get some amazing views of the hills and valleys. You will almost never lose the way-- keep moving towards the big telecommunication tower. But do remember to carry enough water with you-- there is NO water source on the way.
Camping at Bababudanagiri can be one of the most disappointing things. There are numerous stalls giving sleeping mats and blankets on rent, but be warned that the entire area is filthy, with human and animal excrement splattered almost all around. Also beware of the food available there. Camping in the open near the shrine is prohibited, as the locals and the police cite regular sightings of big cats and other wildlife around.
And if you are bored with the camping facilities there, amuse yourself by reading some of the instructions on the notice boards...
